Laura Potter, Global Head of Computational Biology, Syngenta, Helping feed the world with innovative agricultural products: Opportunities for computational biology

November 14, 2017 | 4:20 pm - 5:20 pm EST

As the world’s rapidly growing population is driving ever increasing demand for food, feed and fuel, we are faced with the challenge to grow higher-yielding crops with less water and fewer inputs.  Agriculture companies are focused on meeting these needs by delivering innovative products and technologies into the marketplace that improve crop performance. This requires the ability to integrate, analyze and model complex genetic, genomic and phenotypic datasets, and to enable predictive, data-driven decision support for product design, development and placement.  Computational biology provides an array of key skillsets to help address these challenges, including bioinformatics, quantitative genetics and mathematical modeling.  In this presentation I will share some examples of how modeling and computation enable design of new and enhanced seed products.  These examples will also highlight exciting opportunities for computational biologists to innovate and advance science research in the agricultural industry.
