Budapest Semesters in Mathematics–NEW Taste of BSM Spring 2021 Online Learning Opportunity for Students

BSM is excited to offer a no-tuition, non-credit Spring 2021 online learning opportunity, up to two courses, during this challenging time as our in-person study abroad program was canceled due to COVID-19.   NEW: BSM is also offering the option to take up to two courses for credit with home school approval.

We are accepting applications from undergraduate students and recent graduates in the Math Community to participate in this online small group enrichment program. Students will have the opportunity to enroll in an advanced math course taught by our BSM Professors in Hungary.  If students have some extra time while at home or at school in the spring, we hope they will think about a virtual BSM class.  Participation in this program can be listed on graduate school applications or CV/resumes for internships. We would appreciate you sharing this BSM online opportunity with any of your students who may find the BSM program of interest. The application deadline is January  8, 2021.

Non-credit, no-tuition courses: BSM is not charging tuition or issuing transferable credit to your home school. However, there will be a small enrollment fee per course to reserve a space in a course and you may enroll in up to two courses. Upon completion of your studies each student who successfully completes the course will receive a BSM Gradesheet (non-credit) and a BSM t-shirt (U.S. Addresses). Participation in this program can be listed on graduate school applications or CV/resumes for internships. The first week of classes will be a shopping period for students to analyze which courses would best fit with their interests and change registration choices. Courses offered: https://www.bsmath.hu/CURRENT/Courses.html

Credit bearing courses: BSM is offering these same courses for credit with a tuition fee of $950.00 (with the $100 enrollment fee applied to this cost) per course. Check with your home school for approval.  BSM will issue an official transcript for these math courses. Students may change their course from non-credit to credit after classes begin with BSM and home school approval.

APPLY-The application process includes submitting an application, one letter of math faculty recommendation and emailing an unofficial transcript to BSM. Complete details (schedule and courses) and a link to the BSM application can be found here: https://www.budapestsemesters.com/spring-2021-distance-learning-opportunity/

  • Courses are 90 minutes each day and will be held either Monday/Wednesday or Tuesday/Thursday. Schedule:  https://www.bsmath.hu/CURRENT/Schedule.html
  • An optional Hungarian Plus class (language, culture and society) will be offered for those who are interested and is scheduled for after the meeting of the regular math courses. No cost for this class.

The webpage is also found under the APPLY tab on the BSM home page.

Although we hope to welcome students back to a full program in the near future, we have made the decision to use some of our reserves to provide this opportunity to students who are passionate about mathematics and are willing to take on extra work in addition to their regular classes this fall. It is also an opportunity for our organization to continue to support our exceptional teacher-scholars in Hungary who have been affected by the closure of our tuition supported program.
