Steve Campbell, Distinguished Professor Emeritus, 1945-2021

Distinguished Professor Emeritus Steve Campbell passed away January 12, at age 75, of a brain tumor. He was faculty in the Department of Mathematics for a remarkable 47 years, from immediately after his 1972 PhD until retirement in December 2019. His service to the department includes many years as Graduate Program Director. Steve worked in the areas of Control, DAEs, Numerical and Applied Analysis, Linear Algebra, and Operator Theory. In addition to advising 20 PhD students and writing a dozen books, he published over 300 papers, many of which were widely cited (h-index 46). His professional service included serving on Editorial Boards of SIAM journals. He was professionally recognized for his many accomplishments, and was made a Fellow of both SIAM and IEEE. He was also an enthusiastic and accomplished painter and diver.
