Sciences Faculty, Staff, Students Receive 2020-21 University Honors

Nine members of the College of Sciences community were recently recognized with 2020-21 NC State teaching, diversity, extension and excellence awards.

Jeremiah Feducia, teaching associate professor in the Department of Chemistry, received the Alumni Association Outstanding Teacher Award. The award recognizes excellence in teaching at all levels. Recipients of this award become members of the Academy of Outstanding Teachers for as long as they remain on the NC State faculty.

Maria Gallardo-Williams, teaching professor in the Department of Chemistry, was recognized with the Chancellor’s Community Award for Outstanding Faculty. The award is given to those who demonstrate excellence in the incorporation of diversity and inclusion in teaching, research, service and collaboration.

Gary Lackmann, professor in the Department of Marine, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, received the Alumni Association Distinguished Undergraduate Professor Award. This award is one of the most prestigious undergraduate faculty awards given on campus. Recipients retain that title as long as they are members of the NC State faculty.

Melissa Ramirez, teaching assistant professor in the Department of Biological Sciences, was recognized with the Outstanding Teacher Award and was also inducted into the Academy of Outstanding Teachers. 

Radmila Sazdanovic, assistant professor in the Department of Mathematics, received the 2020 Outstanding Extension Award and was also inducted into the Academy of Outstanding Faculty in Extension and Engagement.

Jason Painter, director of the Science House, and West Wiggins, warehouse manager in the Department of Marine, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, were recognized as the college’s winners of Awards for Excellence, NC State’s highest honors for non-faculty employees. They will be recognized at a university-level awards ceremony with the other 2021 unit winners.

Loulou Batta, a senior in chemistry, and Sasha Pereira, a senior in zoology, were among four students to receive the Mathews Medal. The award, named for Walter J. Mathews, NC State’s first student, honors graduating seniors who are leaving the university a better place because of their leadership.
