Welcome to SIAM and Learn LaTeX this Thursday (9/1)

Hello from the NCSU chapter of SIAM!

Welcome back from your first week of chaos! We want to extend an invitation for everyone to join the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). Our organization is dedicated to the advancement of applied mathematics, computational and data science, as well as their applications to not only engineering, but to society as a whole. Our goal is to promote research and collaboration between mathematics and the world of science and technology. As a member of SIAM (FREE for NCSU students), you will be able to benefit from, and contribute to, those goals. You can find out more about us and what we do on our website: https://siam.wordpress.ncsu.edu/ and by joining this listserv: math-siam@lists.ncsu.edu

First of all, we want to announce our first event of the year, a LaTeX Bootcamp lead by Kylan Schatz. In this one hour bootcamp, you will learn to typeset like a professional mathematician! You will learn some basic syntax and commands as well as creating your own macros. By the end of the workshop, you will be able to create your first LaTeX document for your homework or research. All you need to bring is a laptop that’s connected to the internet.

This will be a hybrid event with light refreshments for those who attend in person. Please details below:

Speaker: Kylan Schatz

Time: September 1 (Thursday) 3-4 pm

Location: POE 214 and via zoom

We (the NCSU chapter of SIAM) will be hosting a number of events this semester. There will be exciting opportunities to hear from industry leaders and national labs, connect with your fellow graduate students and alumni, and learn new skills through our bootcamp series (like this one!). Stay tuned for future announcements! If you’d like to become a student member of SIAM, please follow these steps:

Finally, if you are interested in giving a talk/tutorial, or have a recommendation for someone to speak, please email me (xxu35@ncsu.edu)!

Best,

Nikki Xu
