Office of Undergraduate Research Announcements and Updates (10/28/2022)

Students and faculty/staff are encouraged to meet with (or email) OURstaff and student research ambassadors for any research-related questions or concerns! We’re happy to help provide support, information, and/or resources. 

OUR Events and Reminders

  • Spring OUR Research Award Proposals are open and will close on November 14. Please carefully review the information and instructions on the OUR funding page and use all provided templates. Don’t forget to work closely with your mentor! Students from all disciplines are encouraged to submit their research/creative work proposals. The OUR will provide help sessions for proposals – help sessions have been shown to increase review scores and chances of funding.
    • Final help session on November 4, 9:00-10:30 in Cox 204. You can drop in at any time!
    • You can also email Dr. Showalter for additional help.
  • The OUR Fall seminar series still has available sessions. You can view the list of research-related topics, days, and times at this link. Spring 23 seminars will be posted late Nov/early Dec.
  • Are you presenting at a conference and would like to practice a presentation or have a PPT/poster reviewed? The OUR will host a practice and feedback session on November 14 from 4:30-5:30 in Cox 204.   
  • The National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) will be held April 13-15, 2023 at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Abstracts are due by November 30. More information here. In addition to “typical” oral/poster research presentations, NCUR provides options for creative works (e.g., a Jazz Expo, a Mural Project).   • The State of North Carolina Undergraduate Research and Creativity Symposium (SNCURCS) will be held Saturday, December 3 at UNC Wilmington. Abstract submission is closed. Sophomores are encouraged to consider applying for a Barthalmus Award (due November 2). Registration is due by November 7. 
  • The World Conference on Undergraduate Research (WCUR) will be held at the University of Warwick April 3-6, 2023. Applications are due “the beginning of November”; find more information hereInform the OUR if you apply.
  • The ACC Meeting of the Minds conference is March 24-26, 2023 and will be hosted by Virginia Tech. NC State will take a select number of students. Undergraduate researchers from any discipline are encouraged to apply, and will need to submit a faculty letter of support, abstract for the work, resume, and an application. The submission form will be available early in November.
  • The OUR provides travel awards (accepted throughout the year) to help mitigate costs of going to a conference or discipline-related event if you are accepted to present. Make sure to read requirements and submit all necessary information. 

Other Events and Reminders

  • Review and consider applying to be an AmGen scholar. This Summer opportunity provides hands-on research experiences for Science and Engineering students.
  • Engineering and related sciences students are invited to an info session for summer research programs at Vanderbilt University on November 2 from 12:00-1:00 (106 Scott Hall).
  • The Department of Energy’s Office of Science accepts applications for Summer 2023 researchers. Help sessions will be held in Oct/Nov (CCISULI), and applications are due January 10. Find more information here.
  • The University Fellowships Office is hosting a Boren Awards info session. Join in person or online on November 1 from 9:00-110:00 to learn more (see attached with details).
