Pure Math Graduate Student Seminar: Francisco Ponce Carrion, Marginal Independence Models

November 7, 2022 | 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm EST

Marginal independence models have been commonly studied in the context of graphical models, where we use a graph to convey the different marginal independence relations between random variables. However, there are marginal independence relations that cannot be expressed with a graph, which is why we provide a more general framework in which we can define a marginal independence model. This talk will provide an overview of general marginal independence models for the case of binary random variables and show that we can study these models using tools from algebraic geometry. In particular, we will display the connection between marginal independence models and toric varieties.
