Transfer FAQs

Here are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about mathematics transfer credit.

When can I take a credit-by-exam and for which courses?

You can take a CBE for some math courses, please see detailed information here (link: Undergraduate Credit by Exam).

Overview

Students who have prior experience with some introductory courses can request to receive credit for the course by completing an exam process. The Math Undergraduate office determines eligibility for the credit-by-exam. Upon successful completion of the credit-by-exam process, students will receive credit, but no letter grade, for the course; credit-by-exam courses do not count in your GPA. Students who do not pass the credit-by-exam will be enrolled in the appropriate course.

Students may attempt credit by exam once for each class. There is absolutely no cost to you for taking a credit by examination and no transcript record is made if you don’t pass the exam. Students may not attempt credit by exam for a class they have already failed or been enrolled in past Census Day. An attempt is defined as a letter grade, a withdrawal, S/U (credit-only) grade, or transfer credit.

There is no limit to the number of classes that can be applied to your degree using Credit By Exam. Some classes, however, are not eligible for credit by exam.

Approval

Please email our transfer credit officer, Dr. Kulkarni (math-transfer-officer@ncsu.edu) with your name, Student ID number, the course that you want to receive credit for, and a rationale for why you have the requisite knowledge of the course’s learning outcomes. If you want to receive credit for a course that has a prerequisite, you must first show transfer credit for the pre-requisite course or take the credit-by-exam for the prerequisite course.

All students need the approval of their academic adviser as per the University policy (link: https://policies.ncsu.edu/regulation/reg-02-50-01/). We would need the academic advisor to email Dr. Kulkarni (math-transfer-officer@ncsu.edu) that they have approved the student should attempt the CBE.

Timeline

For MA141, MA241, MA242 and MA 341 credit-by-exams are usually held during finals week. If you would like to get CBE for these courses, please contact math-transfer-officer@ncsu.edu at least 4 weeks before the final exam period. Take into account any prerequisite chains when considering credit-by-exam. Please email math-transfer-officer@ncsu.edu at least 6 weeks before the finals week to find out if a credit-by-exam is possible for other courses.

Test Results

The student will be contacted once their exam is graded.  If the student gets a score of 75 or above, they will get the course credit.  If they get a score below 75, they will need to take the course to receive course credits.  The student may not attempt CBE for the same course again.

Is it possible to transfer my graduate courses that I took as an undergrad?

Credits can be transferred into our PhD program only if they are from a Master’s program at another institution or from our own undergraduate program. You can find more information near the bottom of this page: https://catalog.ncsu.edu/graduate/graduate-handbook/minimum-requirements.

I am planning on taking a math course at another university. How do I know if this course will be transferred to NC State or not?

First check if the courses that you are interested in are already listed in the database (link:https://webappprd.acs.ncsu.edu/php/transfer/).

If not, please email a detailed course description, syllabus and list of topics covered in the course to math-transfer-officer@ncsu.edu

What do I need to do after I have completed a math course at another university?

All transcripts should be sent to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions (undergrad-admissions@ncsu.edu).  It takes several days to process the transcripts, so please be patient until the system is updated.

If the course you have taken is already in the database, you will get the course credit automatically, once the transcripts are processed.  If the course is not in the database, please email a detailed course description, syllabus and a list of topics covered in the course to math-transfer-officer@ncsu.edu

If the course you have taken is from an institute or a university outside the USA, we will need a WES evaluation to determine the number of credit hours. Please find more information here (link https://admissions.ncsu.edu/apply/international/transfer/).

It is taking longer than expected to transfer my courses. What should I do?

Please make sure that your university has sent the transcript to NCState.  If you have any further questions, please reach out to Registration and Records using this link (link: https://registrar.ncsu.edu/questions-about-transfer-credits/)
